We’re big fans of Bnter, an app that allows you to share your conversations with others publicly. The same way you share photos via the web or your mobile phone, Bnter allows you to share snippets of conversations you have with friends on the web. Microsoft and Nokia’s industry-altering announcement of a strategic alliance back in February has today been bolstered with the signing of a definitive agreement between the two companies. In announcing the inking of the paperwork, the Microkia crew point out that they’re already hard at work developing “a portfolio” of Nokia Windows Phone devices, which will be shipping “in volume” in 2012, but there’s still a twinkling hope that they can get something out on the market in 2011. Nokia devs have started porting key applications and services to Windows Phone, with mapping and navigation getting a highlight mention, while there will indeed be a “Nokia-branded global application store that leverages the Windows Marketplace infrastructure.” Notably, this is described as a single portal where devs can serve their apps to users of Windows Phone, Symbian and Series 40 devices — it’ll be interesting to see how they work out the details of that. There’s also confirmation that Microsoft will pay Nokia multiple billions of dollars as part of the agreement, some of which will be spent on completing an intellectual property-sharing agreement between the two teams. So yes, the third ecosystem is well and truly on its way.

A team of UK scientists has developed a headset that can bring voices back to those who have lost their speech due to injury, cancer, stroke, and other maladies. They hope the prototype — which uses magnets positioned in the user’s mouth or tongue — will take the place of low-tech solutions like throat valves, which have the tendency to get clogged. When he or she speaks, changes to the magnets’ movements are detected by the device, which associates specific facial movements with corresponding words (the device currently has a vocabulary of about 50). The whole thing is still pretty clunky, as evidenced by the image at right, but the researchers are working on cramming the technology into a device roughly the size of a Bluetooth headset. They’re also working on a way to implant magnets into the tongue of the wearer — positioning the magnets in the wearer’s mouth is proving to be one of the largest difficulties in implementing the technology.

The bantam PicoHD5.1 packs a lot of oomph into a pocket-sized device; on one side, there’s room for a USB hard drive, thumb drive or SD card. On the reverse, you’ll find HDMI / component outputs capable of piping whatever media you just plugged in onto your television or monitor. There’s even support for 5.1 channel surround sound, and we’re told that it’s encased in aluminum — you know, for those inevitable bumps and bruises. Google Chrome already sports a number of security-minded features, from Incognito mode to a software sandbox which makes exploiting the browser a Herculean task. Now, Google has announced additional protection for Chromium and Chrome users.

Built upon the Safe Browsing API, the new feature introduces protection against malicious downloads. If a download link appears in the Safe Browsing blacklist, Chrome and Chromium will warn users against downloading — a save button is still presented, of course, in case you’re convinced a file is perfectly safe to download.

We’d like to see something a bit more eye-catching than the red warning icon — like perhaps painting the entire bar red. Many of the people a feature like this aims to protect probably won’t notice the icon or change in wording as they’ll be focused on clicking the save button.

Google is initially making download protection available to Chrome dev channel users, and you’ll likely see it in Canary and Chromium snapshot builds as well. After thorough testing, beta and stable users will be next in line.

You’ve seen this setup before: a group of mirrors are strategically positioned to bounce a laser beam across an open space, ensuring that even the most nimble of invaders — excepting MacGyver, perhaps — will set sirens blaring. Apple’s secret quest for living room domination is off to a good start, that is if an analyst’s report is to believed. Ming-Chi Kuo of Concord Securities surveyed Apple supplies and found that the latest generation Apple TV managed to maintain steady sales since its October 2010 launch. He claims that Apple sold just over 1 million units before Christmas and around 820k since the start of January. Of course these are all estimates, but Apple might confirm them in Wednesday’s earning conference call. Apple famously called the Apple TV a hobby but it seems to be turning into a profitable hobby. If true, this cements the latest generation Apple TV as more than just a side project. It’s an important piece in Apple’s ecosytem.

The EU has commissioned an investigation into how European ISPs handle traffic and manage their networks, in a move that could lead to new legislation on net neutrality. The investigation, to be conducted by the Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC), will cover both mobile and fixed Internet providers, with particularly close attention paid to any barriers consumers may face when changing operators. BEREC will also consult with consumers and corporations to determine whether or not ISPs are being completely transparent about their traffic management practices, or advertised connection speeds. In a speech delivered yesterday, Neelie Kroes, the European Commission’s Vice President for the Digital Agenda, admitted that some ISPs need to restrict some bandwidth-heavy services in order to protect their networks, but promised to publicly name and take action against any operators found to be stifling competition or consumer choice:

“Mark my words: if measures to enhance competition are not enough to bring Internet providers to offer real consumer choice, I am ready to prohibit the blocking of lawful services or applications. It’s not OK for Skype and other such services to be throttled. That is anti-competitive. It’s not OK to rip off consumers on connection speeds.”

It’s unlikely, however, that the EU will implement legislation as pointed as the net neutrality rules the FCC unveiled in the US, nor as expansive as the law that Chile introduced last summer. In a report issued yesterday, the EU affirmed that “operators should be allowed to determine their own business models and commercial arrangements” — words that no doubt delighted many in Europe’s ISP community. The results of BEREC’s investigation are due to be published by the end of the year.

It’s baseball season, and for the many of us who play fantasy baseball, there has been an app missing from Android for quite some time that finally arrived recently: ESPN FLB (or Fantasy League Baseball). With this app, you can manage your ESPN fantasy baseball team on the go from any Android device.

This app is offered in two versions: a free and a premium. The free version will allow you to manage your rosters, including proposing and accepting trades and setting lineups while the premium offers additional content from ESPN. If you’re someone who just wants the app to manage your baseball roster, the free version will probably work just fine. If you want extra analysis and tips, you may want to spring for the premium version, which is $4.99. This article will mainly talk about the Premium version.

When you first open the app, you will see ESPN’s Fantasy Baseball homescreen. Once logged in, it will display your current matchup with up-to-date scoting to give you a quick glimpse as to how you’re doing. Underneath that box, recent headlines from around the baseball world are displayed. As you scroll down the page, there will be an array of options to choose from: Latest Headlines for a more indepth look at the news, MLB Scoreboard, which gives you scores from around the league, Video, which will display a clip of a major recent news story, Latest Tweets, which is essentially a list that compiles all of the baseball analysts’ Tweets at ESPN

Within the scoring box on top of the homepage, there are three options: League Home, myTeam and Scoreboard. Selecting League Home will bring you all of the latest news and transactions from around your specific league. myTeam will display your current roster, giving you the option to adjust your lineup accordingly and Scoreboard will show all the current scores in your league at the moment.

Other options within your League include: Manage DL, Standings, Players, Schedule, Message Board, League Settings and Waiver Order; all of which are pretty self explanatory. In the top right corner though is an button I really like. Once you click the button, you will be brought to your Activity Feed, where it will provide the most up-to-date news on players that currently reside on your roster in addition to players that are added or dropped in your league. It’s very handy and prevents you from having to go through each player’s news individually. You can narrow it down if you want to if you only want transactions or player updates displayed.

Overall, the app is very handy for managing your ESPN fantasy baseball team. It took a while, but there is finally a dedicated app from ESPN to help with your fantasy baseball season. Good luck!  More pics, and download links after the break.

While not a game per se, I found Mitoza intriguing enough to spend quite some time with it. You start off with a seed, and are then presented with two choices: you can either click a flower pot, or click a cute little birdie.

If you click the flower pot, a flower pot appears and the seed is planted inside. You’re then presented with two further choices — a water can or a bottle of fertilizer. Each choice you make causes your creation to morph, and presents you with two other choices.

There’s no winning or losing, really. Each “game” usually lasts around four or five choices, at which point the plant/animal dies in some creative (but not too gruesome) way. At this point you instantly start over with a new seed.

The graphics are captivating; the whole thing has a cinematic feel to it, with a bit of artificial camera shake added for style.

All in all, it’s a fun, peaceful way to spend a few minutes, and it might even make you think a little bit while you’re at it.

The first is a full-featured proxy API, which will, for example, allow users to set different proxy servers for normal browsing and Incognito mode. Proxy auto-config scripts are also supported by the API.

The second — Web Navigation Extension — is a bit more expansive. This API will allow devs to build everything from more powerful safe browsing extensions — like Traffic Light — to data analysis and reporting extensions.

Both APIs are currently experimental, so you’ll need to enable them on the about:flags page to try out any relevant extensions. Apart from a proxy example built by Google and shipped with the Chromium source, we’re not aware of any examples just yet, however. We’ll let you know when we spot any slick, new extensions which do surface.

Hello Expense is one mobile app that gets it right. It’s an expense tracker that lets you use your Android-powered phone to quickly log the money you spend and then analyze it and see where it all went.

I recently had the chance to use it in a real-life situation – a road trip that took a few days and involved quite a few expenses. Logging each expense took seconds, and at the end of each day I could get a great overview of how much money I spent on each category so far.

Categories and tags are user-configurable; the app also sports its own number pad to make number entry easy, regardless of what keyboard you’re using.

It’s not really a secret the Microsoft had planned on bringing bits of Windows Phone 7′s Metro UI to Windows 8, but we haven’t seen a lot of really telling evidence. However, with the Windows 8 milestone 3 build now available to Microsoft Connect partners, it was really just a matter of time before we started to get a peek.

Thanks to Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott, we’ve now had a glimpse at what the Windows 8 welcome screen will look like. As you can see, the typography is very Metro indeed. Within Windows also mentions that the background image is customizable, and we’re wondering if it might not pull from your current Windows 8 theme. This particular shot shows the CTRL + ALT + DELETE login option, but we imagine you’ll still be able to log in by clicking your account picture tile as well.

Rivera and Thurrott also mention that the tablet version of the welcome screen will allow you to log in by swiping a pattern on the screen — as you can on current Android devices.
